Motorhome Hire UK

Motorhome Hire in the UKMotorhome hire UK is provided by quite a few companies, but Motorholme have more vehicles in more locations than anyone else. This means that you will have the widest choice of vehicle at a location close to you.

Are you thinking about holiday ideas for 2012 already? Well there is no time like the present to do so. We are taking bookings right now for 2012 and even some for as far ahead as Glastonbury 2013!  It is worth getting in touch with us early as we are predicting a big year for motorhome hire next year. There are going to be people from all over the World looking for accommodation for the Olympic Games 2012 in and around London. We are predicting that B&Bs and Hotels are going to sell out fast, and it has to be said that they are all hiking up their prices right now. Hiring a motorhome sounds like a much better bet as you are not tied to one location, but can move around to different venues when you feel like it.

Music lovers might be a bit sad that there is no Glastonbury in 2012, but there are tons of other festivals on in the UK you can go to.  There’s no problem about festival campervan hire, we’re quite happy to let campers have a bit of luxury, a secure campervan and somewhere where you can eat, sleep and relax.

What ever your reason for looking for a great deal on motorhome hire in the UK, we can help you out. If you are in the UK, just call 0800 612 8719 anytime to get a quote.

Campervan Rental UK

Campervan Rental UK

Every now and again we have a little think about what is a campervan and what is a motorhome. The boss, Andrew likes to think of it as campervans don’t have washrooms and motorhomes do.  Myself I like to think of campervans being smaller than motorhomes, but in the back of my mind, I really think of campervans as vehicles like the old Volkswagen Type 2 I had in the 80′s.  Anyway I digress, you are obviously here for campervan rental in the UK, so what do we have?

We have the largest selection of motorhomes available today in the UK and the largest network too. This is now more than 500 motorhomes spread out all over England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This means that if there is a particular motorhome or campervan you fancy trying, the chances are that we have one for you to rent. It also means that there is going to be a camper near to you to rent too.

So what next? Well you can either go ahead and get a quote for your campervan rental online right now or call 0800 612 8719 and talk to us about campervan rental UK. That’s about it really, oh yeah have a think about where you want to go…but really it doesn’t matter, you can decide that when you pick up your campervan.

Camping du Pylone

Camping du Pylone, Antibes

Campervan HireThere’s a bunch of my friends off to Camping du Pylone, Antibes in the South of France, I’m not jealous at all, not at all, well maybe a bit, perhaps a lot – oh OK – I’M JEALOUS!  The weather down in The South of France at the moment is just superb, half way though September and they are nudging the thermometer at round 30C, but unlike the super baking hot summer, it does cool off a little at night so you can get a good nights sleep in your motorhome.

Camping du Pylone, AntibesHere’s a couple of reviews from Camping du Pylone:

“What a fantastic campsite! Great people, very friendly with a real community spirit. Clean and well kept. Great pool area. Great bar area with the choice of eating in the restaurant which was excellent or there is a varied takeaway food menu which was very good and great value. There is a pizza hut which serves freshly cooked pizza, the best we had ever tasted! Reasonably priced supermarket and not to forget their own little bakery shop which was just superb! Great location for the bus and train which is cheap and takes you up and down the french riviera. Mary looked after us when we were there and was extremely helpful. We loved it!”

and

“We have stayed at Camp du Pylone five times over the past three years. We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves every time and are quite unable to resist returning.

It is a very friendly, family run site suitable for all ages. Our son (aged 5) absolutely loves it. The main pool is large and well cared for. There is also a very shallow baby pool. You do have to pay to use the pool in July & August, but it is free the rest of the time. Men, please note that French regulations mean that swimming shorts are not allowed in public pools!

Eurocamp this is not, but unlike most Eurocamp sites it is ideally placed to explore the South of France with the bus stop, train station and beach five minutes walk from the camp entrance. You will not need a car to get about which means everyone can take advantage of the cheap but delicious wine! This time we used the bus a lot and it is great as you can travel almost anywhere for 1 Euro!

Jo and Christian, who run the bar and restaurant, are really, really lovely, friendly people. The food in the restaurant is great and very reasonably priced. Also, the pizzas are delicious!! The nightly entertainment is excellent and there is something for everyone. Friday bingo is a particular favourite with large prizes (one of which we won this time!).

Unfortunately, we are unable to return to Camp du Pylone this year, but I do not doubt that we will be back again in 2012!!”

So how does that sound? Not too shabby I hope – this is a pretty full on campsite, so some of you may prefer to go somewhere a bit quieter, and if you do, there are tons about.

Bruges Christmas Market

Bruges Christmas Market

With winter approaching it is the ideal time to think about perhaps using up the last of your annual leave or getting the last holiday of the year out of your motorhome by visiting some of Europe’s Christmas markets.

Although Germany is famous for its own Christmas markets, much closer to home is the Bruges Christmas Market in Belgium. Bruges is a beautiful medieval town to visit at any time of year and the winter is no exception. Only an hour or so from the French channel port of Dunkirk, Bruges has a beautiful Christmas Market in the main square close to the Belfry clock tower, at 83 metres high; it dominates this beautiful old square.

During November and December, this square hands itself over to dozens of little chalets selling savoury snacks, hot drinks, Christmas decorations and seasonal gifts. The other fun feature of the Markt Christmas market in Bruges is the ice rink open throughout the market.

Only a few minutes’ walk away, in another smaller square called Simon Stevin Plein, lies another Christmas market, not quite so big this time but picturesque and quaint surrounded by little shops.

With its beautiful buildings, warm, cosy bars and restaurants a visit to Bruges is a welcome distraction from the cold winter weather!

So how about getting a quote for motorhome hire visiting the Bruges Christmas Market? Call 0800 612 8719 today, we are waiting for your call.

Motorhome Hire

Motorhome Hire

Motorhome hire is most popular in the summer as you would expect, but there are plenty of reasons why you might like to hire a motorhome in the off peak season too.  One of the main reasons is that the cost of rental is much less in the non peak times, if you want to check how much it will cost either call 0800 612 8719 or get an online motorhome hire quote right here.  Autumn is a popular time for buying vehicles and motorhomes are no exception, so maybe you would like to hire one for a few days and see if the motorhoming lifestyle is for you? Similarly you might like to try a particular model to see if it lives up to your expectations. With over 500 vehicles dotted around the British Isles you can be pretty sure that we have most vehicles covered.

Motorhome hire is available for weekends from Friday morning until Monday afternoon, so maybe you would just like to get away for the weekend or go and see some friends? Remember, motorhome holidays are not just for families, there are plenty of 2 berth campers available too, which are ideal for couples or single people wanting to go exploring.

So why not give motorhoming a try? Now is a good time to get away in the UK or Europe if you fancy your holiday a little more laid back and peaceful, oh and cheaper of course!

Single Parent Holiday Ideas

single parent holiday ideasIt seems that the appeal of a motorhome hire holiday is not just for couples and families, but is now popular with single parents.  The fact is that more people are choosing to stay at home for their holidays, and in no demographic is this more evident than with single parents and their children. There are many reasons why this has one of the more popular single parent holiday ideas.

One reason seems to be that motorhome hire is inexpensive compared with most package holiday deals and these savings are the main reason behind the rise in popularity of such a holiday.  A survey  taken by Monarch Airlines revealed that 11 per cent of Brits don’t go on holiday at all.

Particularly with the consequences of job insecurity, financial fears and worries concerning the future, more and more families this year left their holiday plans to the last minute hoping to get a bargain. It seems that this year people just want to head to the coast in the UK.

The new craze of ‘glamping’ , or luxury camping, can include hiring a motorhome for a week,  which means it has never been easier to enjoy a perfect holiday in the UK. Many of the beaches on Britain’s coastline are equal to anywhere in the world, and can be enjoyed for a mere fraction of the price.

Motorhome hire holidays are suitable for everyone as the main attractions of holidaying in a motorhome cross all ages, genders and backgrounds.

The key to the appeal and enjoyment of a caravan holiday is the freedom; specifically, the freedom for people to do as they wish and to do so exactly when they would like.

Motorhoming is the perfect base from which to adopt your own holiday pace, the traditional constraints of normal life, such as when to eat, when to sleep and when to go out, all disappear out the motorhome window when on holiday. The appeal of the motorhome holiday is the pure sense of enjoyment and adventure garnered from being in the great outdoors.

So does a motorhome hire holiday appeal as a suggestion for single parent holiday ideas? We hope so, if it does, get in touch.

Motorhoming and bikes

If you are heading off in a motorhome for a few days, whether you have hired it or its your own, always think about taking your bikes with you (if you own any) whenever possible. We hadn’t used our bikes for years until we bought our motorhome and went away on holiday in it, but before our trip we got the bikes out – had them serviced and took them on a short ride before we needed to use them for any distance.  That was it, we realised that motorhoming and bikes really do go together.

Many motorhomes are fitted with cycle racks for a minimum of 2 bikes and can usually be increased to hold 4 bikes with a little extra outlay, so it’s always worth asking about. Cycle racks are not too expensive and was well worth any expense incurred in our case.

So often when you arrive at a campsite after a long drive you simply want to park up, get the heating on at this time of year and have a little rest and a cup of coffee, in my case. Once that’s done we find we quite often want to explore the area or nearest town to the campsite but really don’t want to move the van again, and we don’t necessarily know how far it is to walk. Our answer is bikes, it give us a cheap reliable option to explore the area, visit places without the constraints, if that’s the right word, of taking our motorhome out again and more importantly – it gives us an opportunity for some exercise after that long drive, a chance to cycle along beaches, country lanes, do a little shopping, and dare I say it, have a glass of wine with lunch before returning back to the campsite.

If you don’t own bikes at the moment, some campsites do hire them out, so that may be another opportunity to explore before you travel. If you think motorhoming and bikes sounds like fun, mention this when booking your motorhome hire, we can make sure that the vehicle is fitted with a suitable bike rack.

Benicassim Festival 2012

Benicassim Festival 2012I know it seems like a long, long way off, but Benicassim Festival 2012 tickets are now on sale.  Benicassim is on the Costa del Azahar in Spain. For me, this is one of my favourite places in Spain. Because it was midway between Valencia and Barcelona airports it never really got the package holiday trade back in the 70s and 80s like Benidorm, Marbella and Torremolinos did.  This means it remains pretty much unspoilt and very beautiful.

The festival is right in the center of Benicassim, so you have loads of nightclubs to go to as well as all the bands at the festival itself. All the action tends to take place at night and going on until 5am.  There aren’t many details at the moment about the line up, but if it is anything like last year it’s going to be a top quality festival that you will never ever forget.

The actual date of the festival is 12th July to the 15th July, but the ticket actually includes camping for 8 days from the 9th July until the 16th July.  So why not hire a motorhome and make a real holiday out of the Benicassim Festival 2012?

Winter Motorhoming

Motorhome Ferry to Spain

Motorhome Ferry to Spain

It all depends how much time you have to play with if you want to take a motorhome to Spain. Most people opt for using a Dover to France Ferry Crossing and then driving through France and crossing over into Spain at The Pyrenees.

However if you want to get there quickly there is the option of taking a motorhome ferry to Spain.  When I was young I went with my family from Southampton to Bilbao on a Swedish Lloyd Ferry, but this service was discontinued in 1978 (I’m showing my age now). In more recent years P&O were operating a Portsmouth to Santander ferry, but this was discontinued in September 2010.

The current company who offer a motorhome ferry to Spain are Brittany Ferries who sail from Portsmouth to Bilbao, Portsmouth to Santander and Plymouth to Santander.

It’s up to you, if you consider a drive through France part of your motorhome adventure, take your time and enjoy it.  But if you want to get quickly to Northern Spain and maybe head off to Portugal for some winter sun, then maybe you should consider a motorhome ferry to Spain.

Hire a Campervan

hire a campervan

Here’s an idea for September: hire a campervan and then travel to France.  Why September? Well September is off peak as far as almost everyone is concerned, so everywhere will be less busy and everything is generally cheaper. Certainly motorhome hire outside the peak summer months is much cheaper and most European campsites will be switching to their low season tariffs in the first of second week of September.

France is a popular choice for motorhome hire in September, as the weather is usually still almost summer like, but just a bit less busy.  You could hire a campervan  and then do a quick channel crossing from Dover and explore Normandy or spend a day getting further south towards the South of France, Monaco or Northern Italy.  Alternatively you could take a longer ferry crossing such as the Portsmouth St Malo route and go and explore Brittany and The Atlantic Coast of France. If you make it as far down as La Rochelle or even Biarritz you are in for treat, with superb weather, beaches and relaxed campsites.  The more Southerly parts of France tend to stay nice and warm, well into October.

So what are you waiting for? Get on the phone and give us a call and we can fix you up straightaway. Alternatively, get a quote here online and find out how little it costs to hire a campervan and travel to France.

Caravanette Hire

Caravanette Hire

Caravanette Hire

I can always rely on my Mum and Dad to come up with words I haven’t heard since I were a lad and this week, Caravanette was one of them. Here’s the dictionary definition: ‘a motor vehicle with a rear compartment equipped for living in‘, ah OK that’s a motorhome then?  Are there people Googling Caravanette Hire every day?  Then I thought back to my youth and I am sure that I had a Matchbox Volkswagen Caravanette, I had a quick look around on Ebay and indeed there does seem to be quite a few for sale called just that.  I’m no VW expert, but if someone would like to fill me in with a comment below about if the vehicle pictured was ever called a Volkswagen Caravanette then I’m all ears. I always thought the real name was something like Volkswagen Type 1 Kombi.

As cute as these campers are, things have moved on, modern vehicles are more reliable, efficient, faster, have better brakes, power steering and are just generally easier to drive and more spacious. So if you are looking for caravanettes to hire like the old VW Splitty here, we can’t help you, but if you’d like something more like the Trigano Tribute 2 Berth for your caravanette hire needs, talk to us.

The rear of the  offers a combined 4 burner hob, oven incorporating grill, stainless steel sink, drawers to the underneath and a full length wardrobe. Tour de France Motorhome Route

Tour de France Motorhome Route

Tour de France 2011 Stage 18

I was in the Southern French Alps yesterday the 20th July 2011. This was Stage 17 of the 2011 Tour de France which was from Gap to Pinerolo in Italy. This was a gruelling day for the riders to say the least as it involved the Col d’Izoard and the Col de Montgenevre. The tour passed through the town of Briancon during the afternoon which is near where I was. I made a video to show just how many people follow the Tour de France by motorhome, I really don’t think I have seen so many moorhomes on the move together ever!

Today’s Stage 18 of the Tour de France is currently (as I write) going from Pinerolo over the Col d’Agnel and then through Briancon again and then onto the finish at the Col du Galibier. This is quite a historic finish

Jean Francois Pescheux writes (on the official ‘Le Tour’ web site),

“We return to France and there are three very big cols on the menu. The Agnel will be tackled for the first time ever from this side, then there’s the Izoard and its legendary Casse Déserte, followed by the Galibier.

This will be our chance to celebrate the centenary of this mythic climb’s first appearance on the race route back in the 1911 Tour de France. In addition, the finish, located at an altitude of 2,645 metres, will be the highest in the race’s history. It will remove from the history books the place held since 1986 by the 2,413m Col du Granon. This stage will certainly see a match-up between all those riders who are in contention for the overall title, as will the stage the following day. Whoever is leading the race runs the risk of succumbing to such physical demands.”

Today’s stage is monsterous and so far the weather is holding out well.  If you are into your cycling then maybe next year you should thing about planning a Tour de France Motorhome Route, there’s always somewhere to park up and get a superb view of the race.

UK France Ferry Crossings

UK France Ferry Crossings

UK France Ferry CrossingsIf you read the earlier post about ‘In Search of Sunshine” you might have been wondering how to get the cheapest UK France Ferry Crossings. Well in my experience the cheapest way by far is to use Norfolkline who are now part of DFDS.  The screen shot here, show the prices going one way for a motorhome of up to 2.4m in height travelling from Dover to Dunkirk on the 18th April this month.  As you can see the prices go as low as a £23 and only as high as a completely reasonable £33.

book UK France ferry crossings online

Norfolkline say “When taking UK France Ferry Crossings,  Norfolkline provides an excellent service between Dover and Dunkirk.  The ferry crossing takes approximately 2 hours to and from France and onboard you will experience award winning levels of service whilst benefiting from some of the best fares of any ferry service currently operating to France.  Taking a ferry to France with Norfolkline is a really enjoyable and relaxing experience due to the modern fleet of ferries.”

Dover is renowned for its many ferries to France and mostly associated with Calais, but really Dunkirk provides even better road links to many destinations than Calais.  The only ferry operator currently offering ferries to France directly between Dover and Dunkirk. So why not get a quote now for your next channel crossing?

I’ve always been delighted by Norfolkline’s service and I’m really happy to recommend them regardless of how you are travelling; by car, by motorbike, by motorhome..whatever – I still challenge you to find a cheaper company.  There’s also another aspect of Norfolkline that they don’t advertise and that is their flexibility.  If you look at some other companies you will see you can buy a cheaper ‘non flexible’ ticket or pay a premium for a ticket that you can change at the last moment.  With Norfolkline I have always paid the lowest price, but I have not always turned up at the ferry port on time.  I have never had to wait for hours and hours or been charged extra – they have simply put me on the next available ferry, no questions asked.  Brilliant.

Cheap Ferry From Dover to Dunkirk

Cheap Ferry From Dover to Dunkirk

Cheap Ferry from Dover to Dunkirk

I’ve just been looking for a Cheap Ferry From Dover to Dunkirk for travelling out to France next Wednesday and returning the following Wednesday.  I’m travelling with a low profile motorhome which is less than 2.4m which actually puts it in the same category as a car, but if you go for the taller option, the price isn’t much higher.  I entered the full family, which is myself along with my wife and our two daughters (1 and 7).

Next Wednesday the 18th May was as cheap as £13 if I was prepared to go very very early, but I chose a 6:00 sailing at £19.  The return journey on the 25th May was cheaper as I like to drive up to Dunkirk and then wild camp at the ferry terminal ready to catch an early ferry at 4:01 which was just £13.

Other charges? Just a £1 charge for using a Visa Debit card and a (slightly hefty) fuel surcharge of £12.  Even so the totally for getting my entire family to France and back in a motorhome is just £45. I thoroughly recommend using DFDS’s cheap ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, especially if you are in a motorhome.

Use this link to get the best price for a Cheap Ferry From Dover to Dunkirk.

Cheap Ferry to France From Dover

Cheap Ferry to France From Dover

Cheap Ferry to France From Dover

The summer holidays are rapidly approaching and it’s time that a lot of people will be making their plans.  If you are looking for a cheap ferry to France from Dover, I’d suggest going with DFDS (formerly Norfolkline).  They are the cheapest and most flexible and their staff are superbly helpful.  Sometimes you can get a SeaFrance crossing just as cheap, but if you turn up late (or early) for your ferry then it won’t be free to change you booking. With DFDS I have never been charged extra for not taking the ferry I was supposed to and I have done this many many times!

If you have a low profile or van type motorhome you will travel for the same price as a car. This price also includes up to 5 passengers. If your motorhome is a taller coachbuilt or A Class motorhome you will still find DFDS to be a cheap ferry to France from Dover.

The DFDS route is Dover to Dunkirk. If you haven’t been to Dunkirk before you will be very surprised at how different it is to Calais. It’s quiet, relaxed and just as easy to get onto the motorway as Calais is. But hold up! There’s quite a lot to see around Dunkirk too.

Dunkirk is colonized by surfers, wind surfers, kite flyers and families. The glorious beach at Dunkirk streaches for as far as they eye can see. Home to some 200,000 people, Dunkirk has dramatic art and architecture and probably the best ‘Moules Frites’ in all of France, yet surprisingly is missing from the radar of the average UK traveller.  This is surprising considering Dunkirk’s role in the 1914 evacuation for a third of a million allied troops in operation dynamo and Dunkirk’s present day attractions like shopping, art and history. So if you are just looking for a cheap ferry to France from Dover fine, but it’s worth having a look around Dunkirk itself too.

Cheap Ferries To France From Dover

Cheap Ferries To France From Dover

I’ve consistently found that NorfolkLine, who are now owned by DFDS, are the best for cheap ferries to France from Dover.  I thought I’d share my screenshots with you so you can see what excellent value for money they are, so here goes:

Dover Dunkirk Ferry

I’ve just booked up a ferry for a motorhome (under 2.4m) with 2 adults and 2 children, going to France on the 8th May and returning the following week on the 15th May.

So as you can see travelling out on Sunday 8th May is £29 if you want to travel at midday, but if are prepared to travel earlier or later, you can pick this fare up for just £23.  Please note that this is the one way fare from Dover to France, we’ll cover the return leg of the journey in a minute.

What I like to do is either get to Dover quite late, get across the channel and then do a sneaky wild camp over in France, so I’m all ready for a drive through France in the morning.  This works fine if you are a couple, but maybe if you are a family then you would prefer to get to a camp site to get you and your family settled in for the night.

Dunkirk Dover Ferry

The return journey was a little bit more expensive, this is usually the case at the end of a weekend for returning from France back to Dover, but even so, the most expensive fare was only £36.  The cheapest fare was at 10.01pm which was just £26. Bargain.

There is a fuel surcharge of £12 to be added on to this, so the total cost is £49+£12=£61. I think that is superb.  I had a quick look at the other companies doing the Dover Calais route, but NorfolkLine still came out top for cheap ferries to France from Dover.

So do consider NorfolkLine when you are booking cheap ferries to France from Dover.

Ferry from Dover to Dunkerque

Ferry from Dover to Dunkerque

Ferry from Dover to Dunkerque

Dover is located in Kent, England and is famous for the ‘white cliffs of Dover’ which are easily visible when nearing England on the return journey. The Port of Dover is known as ‘the gateway to Europe’ and is the starting point for Journeys By Ferry from Dover to Dunkerque. The ferry can accommodate pedestrian passengers, cars and commercial vehicles. It takes less than an hour to reach the port of Dunkerque and is easily accessed from the M2/A2 motorway via Canterbury or from the M20/A20 motorway via Ashford. The port is the busiest in the world.

Currency can be exchanged at the on-board Bureau de Change before reaching your destination and therefore Euros may be purchased whilst on the ferry from Dover to Dunkerque. Sterling may be purchased during the return journey to England. There is also an information desk which is open whenever the ferry is travelling across the Channel.

Dunkerque has great shopping and great beaches which can be enjoyed if visiting en-route to your holiday destination. It is in a good location to gain access to many roads leading throughout France and to other European destinations. It is also only about 6 miles to the border of Belgium.

DFDS Seaways, formerly Norfolkline are currently the only company to offer a ferry from Dover to Dunkerque.

Dover, also known as the ‘gateway to Europe’, is the closest point, from England, to France at a distance of 21 miles. This stretches across one of the biggest shipping lanes in the world. With boats travelling through Scandinavia and Northern Europe to the rest of the world, through this 21 mile wide boating highway. Here’s a short piece on ferries from Dover to Dunkirk.

From Dover there are two routes to France; one to Calais and one to Dunkirk (or Dunkerque, as the French write it). The latter boasting France’s third largest port, and a burgeoning hub of tourism. It’s town centre has become renowned for its museums and restaurants, and attracts many every day, from England to the ‘Church of the Dunes’.

The ferry service is operated exclusively by DFDS Seaways who operate Scandanavian and Irish services as well as ferries from Dover to Dunkirk. The service covers a distance of just under 47 miles and leaves from Dover every two hours, with the journey itself lasting around two hours. It can run slightly longer depending on weather conditions and the roughness of the sea.

Ferry from Dover to Dunkirk

A Ferry from Dover to Dunkirk runs between two ports that are equally famous and have many historical ties that have been formed over centuries. In modern history the name Dunkirk conjures pictures of beaches crowded with hundreds of thousands of British Allied troops waiting to be rescued from the German forces in nineteen forty.

The heroic crossing by literally thousands of small boats and seas going craft is the stuff of books and films, something you can think about when you are on the DFDS ferry from Dover to Dunkirk. The camaraderie and numerous untold stories of bravery over that short period led to the phrase “Dunkirk spirit” coming into existence. It referred to the spirit of the British public pulling together to overcome times of adversity. It is still used today when speaking of someone who has succeeded against great odds.

Dover’s white cliffs were immortalized in a World War Two song by Dame Vera Lynn who was famous for entertaining Allied troops throughout the war. Her rendition of “White Cliffs of Dover” was a sure winner every time. This city became a symbol for Britain’s wartime bravery and was often referred to as Hellfire Corner because of the heavy bombing it received.

Do consider the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, that is operated by DFDS, they are an excellent company and will take a low profile motorhome for the same price as a car.

Cheap Ferry to France From Dover

Ferries from Dover to Dunkerque

Ferries from Dover to Dunkerque

I have been backwards and forwards over the English Channel more times than I can remember. In the olden days before I knew better I would use SeaFrance, but one day I turned up late and they tried to charge a huge surcharge which I wasn’t happy with. Another time I turned up at Calais desperate to get back to England and they quoted me something like 330€ as I hadn’t booked in advance.  Later I discovered Speedferries who I loved, but sadly went bust due to being forced out by the ‘giants of the channel’. So who does that leave? Well P&O usually get rated well, but always seem expensive. So then there is my favourite, Norfolkline who operate ferries from Dover to Dunkerque. I have always found them to be superb, if you turn up late they just book you on the next ferry, if you turn up early they will let you go on the ferry before.

Here’s what they say, “When taking a ferry to France Norfolkline provides an excellent service between Dover and Dunkirk. The ferry crossing takes approximately 2 hours to and from France and onboard you will experience award winning levels of service whilst benefiting from some of the best fares of any ferry service currently operating to France.  Taking a ferry to France with Norfolkline is a really enjoyable and relaxing experience due to our modern fleet of ferries. So why not take in some onboard shopping or a quiet meal in one of our delightful restaurants? Dover is renowned for its many ferries to France, whilst Dunkirk provides even better road links to many destinations than Calais. We are the only ferry operator currently offering ferries to France directly between Dover and Dunkirk. So why not get a quote now for your next channel crossing?”

In April 2010 the volcanic ash disruption meant that my parents were stuck in the French Alps and couldn’t get back to England. I was happy to come to their rescue, but everyone I spoke to said “you’ll never get a ferry it’s chaos at Dover”. Well the truth was that it was chaos at Calais rather than Dover. P&O and SeaFrance were hiking up their prices as their service became indispensable. For me though I just thought, “that’s OK, Norfolkline do ferries from Dover to Dunkerque, I’ll use them”. It was predictably no problem at all to go and get them and bring them back to England.

So there you go, you have a choice of ferries across the channel, but I’d say forget Calais, look at ferries from Dover to Dunkerque by Norfolkline.

Motorhome Hire

Motorhome Hire

Closely on the tail of this site’s most popular phrase ‘campervan hire’ is what used to be it’s big brother ‘motorhome hire‘.  Motorhome and campervan have been pretty much interchangeable for many years now.  Even so my mother still insists on calling these lovely vehicles, mobile homes, which is completely incorrect.  Anyway words aside, Motorholme can now boast over 500 motorhomes available for hire, which we believe makes it the UK’s largest motorhome hire fleet.

When it comes to costs, prices will be determined by the rental length as well as vehicle size. It’s worth calling us to compare and find the best vehicle for your needs. For the most part, those who choose motorhome rental over say, staying in a hotel, often find the former less expensive. Plus you have your ‘hotel’ on hand all the time!

One of the many beauties of motorhome travel is that you can stop when you like. However, it’s worth noting that some camping sites are only open during high season. Although a lot of campsites accommodate tents, caravans and motorhomes, some may insist on advance booking for larger vehicles that need big pitches. Availability may also depend on season.

There are many campsites with standings for motorhomes throughout the UK and Europe. They vary from the simple to the ultra luxurious and tariffs are generally reasonable. Some are open all year round. They also have water points and waste disposal points. Electricity is often included in site fees; sometimes there is a small charge. All that remains to do is decide where you would like to holiday and then sort out your motorhome hire. You can make your arrangements online or call 0800 612 8719 anytime you like.

Motorhome Holidays

Motorhome Holidays

motorhome holidays

Taking your kids on motorhome holidays just sounds like a great way to spend a week or two. Pack up and organize all your stuff just the way you want it in your own little home on wheels. Have all your own blankets and towels that remind you of home with you.

Holidays that start off by flying in an airplane may get you to your destination quicker but there are many other benefits to motorhome holidays. When you drive on a holiday it can generally be more inexpensive than flying especially if you have quite a few children. You can stop and get out for a walk or bite to eat whenever you chose to and kids like to have their own stuff with them. They will be more relaxed and less likely to get homesick.

Not having to eat in restaurant three or four times a day can really help keep the expenses down. Plus you do not have to waste valuable time trying to locate a restaurant that could all by itself cause so much arguing and fighting that the holiday could very well end right there. Nothing can destroy a fun holiday fast than bad tension.

Who can remember all the games that they played in the back seat when traveling. There are so many to choose from that there could be a constant stream for days with the traditional eye spy for the little ones and the more physical games for the big ones.

Going to airports are so crazy and many times problems arise like baggage searches and body searches which can put a bit of a problem into a holiday. Plus having to show up two hours early just to get through security on time can make children bored and start to fight.

The best way to travel when going as a family and if time allows would definitely be motorhome holidays. As if you need more reasons but the bonding time alone will make it all worth it.

Wales Campervan Hire

Wales Campervan Hire

Wales Campervan Hire

Wales campervan hire is available in Carmarthen, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Llanelli, Haverfordwest and many other locations throughout the Welsh countryside.  If you live in Wales you will be able to find multiple pick up points where you can begin your trip. If you live much further away then you may prefer to drive ‘the boring bit’ in your own car and then transfer your luggage and yourselves into your motorhome when you get to Wales.

Wales campervan hire is available in Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan which is handy if you are arriving at Cardiff Airport.  Incidentally the airport is close to Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, 12 miles west of Cardiff and 10 miles from junction 33 on the M4. Airport transfers can be arranged if you wish to go straight from the airport to your campervan.

Having a campervan  in Wales enables you to visit the three stunning welsh national parks, Snodownia, Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons. In addition, a tr along the varied coastline, dotted with golden beaches is a must. Do not leave Wales in your Campervan Hire without a visit to the magical island of Angelsey. If you love walking in Wales, then plan to walk across the hills over Crichowell for glorious views. Move your Campervan hire to the Brecon Beacons and visit the jewel of Pembrokeshire, St Davids. Once at St Davids, visit the historic cathedral and see the coast near the beautiful Marloe Sands.

I have great memories from when I was a child, going to campsites in Tenby and Fishgaurd, but now I prefer smaller ones around Aberystwyth and a bit of sneaky wild camping on the Gower Peninsula. Actually I quite like a Friday night in the pubs at The Mumbles.  If you would like to talk to us about Wales campervan hire, call us anytime on 0800 612 8719.

Dog Friendly Motorhome Hire

Dog Friendly Motorhome Hire

dog friendly motorhome hire

It is fair to say that personally I like to take my motorhome holidays with my family – my two daughters and my wife that is.  We don’t have any pets – my three girls are a handful enough – so we don’t need dog friendly motorhome hire ourselves.  However we have many friends who have dogs that go everywhere with them, so we do appreciate the importance of these furry little fellows.  So do we allow dogs in motorhomes? Yes we do, not in all motorhomes, but some are reserved for dog friendly motorhome hire.

If you are bringing your dog with you, please check with your campsite that dogs are allowed. Most campsites welcome pets, particularly abroad. Campsites in France quite often have a complicated tarif where you pay for the camping pitch, the motorhome, each adult, each child and your dog.  I’ve never quite understood why they do this as you take up the same amount of space on the site regardless of how many you are and charging someone an extra euro for bringing their dog isn’t going to make them change their mind about bringing their dog with them!

One of my favourite campsites that allow dogs is the Tyn Rhos Farm Caravan Park in Conwy, Wales. The address is Pentrefoelas, Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0LN (phone: 01690 770655).

The park is located in a peaceful location on a working farm about 7 miles from the popular village of Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia. Ty’n Rhos is a dairy and sheep farm, and you can view activities on the farm such as milking by arrangement. Pets are welcome, and there is a dog walking area provided.

Tasty bar meals are available in the Giler Arms pub which is within walking distance of the caravan park, or you can just stroll out for an evening drink, my perfect pastime in Wales.

So if you would like to talk to us about dog friendly motorhome hire, call 0800 612 8719 anytime or just arrange your motorhome hire online, mentioning that you would like to bring your dog.

Motorhome Rental

Motorhome Rental

motorhome rental

There is nothing like having your own freedom of the open road and having the ability to drive wherever you wish. This is why motorhome rental is more popular than ever. It is often much cheaper to rent a motorhome than going on a foreign package holiday, especially in these gloomy economic times. Lets face it you can go anywhere whenever you choose with a motorhome, you cannot do that in a hotel resort.

There are many benefits with motorhome rental. You can spend good quality time with your family; everyone has enough room to breathe. Motorhomes are not like they were back in the old days; you get luxurious bunk beds, digital television, air conditioning and many more amenities. When you decide to pull up for the night, you can stay in your motorhome and watch your favourite television programmes or just relax outdoors.

We have to be realistic, there are some downsides compared to your standard holiday. Firstly you do not have housekeeping staff to make your bed and lay out your breakfast. You will have plenty of cleaning to do and you may decide to do your own cooking every night. However this is as hard as you make it. If you tidy up as you go along and eat out as you would on a conventional holiday then you will not find it as much of a hardship.

The biggest advantage with this form of holiday though is to experience the freedom to go where you want and at any time you want. By renting a motorhome you are also experiencing the thrill of being in one but not the running costs and bills of actually owning one. They can cost many thousands of pounds new, so if you have never tried one out before it is always best to rent one first to see how you get on and if the experience is suited for you and your family. Call 0800 612 8719 to arrange your motorhome rental.

Festival Campervan Hire

Festival Campervan Hire

festival campervan hire

The increasing popularity of festivals in the UK and Europe has meant that accommodation, for those who don’t fancy being in a tent, is in much greater demand including Campervan and Motorhome hire. In recent years, particularly 2010, festival campervan hire suppliers have quickly run out of vehicles even many weeks before the festival season has got into full swing.

The secret is to get in early; you’ll find better rates, more choice and have a much better chance of securing the vehicle you’re after. For those who are new or returning to campervan hire much has changed over the past few years and the vehicles people choose for festival campervan hire are no exception. Long gone are the days of cramped conditions, uncomfortable beds and minimal facilities. The vast majority of Campervans today come with bathrooms including shower and toilet, fully equipped kitchen, LCD television, DVD players, double beds (and we mean double beds not large singles!) and plenty of space. And even the largest 6 berthers are surprisingly easy to drive.

Combining your wheels with your bed is a great way to take in the Festivals and there are quite often festivals that offer powered sites nearby. Again the secret is book in early as they are snapped up quickly.

If you would like to talk to someone about festival campervan hire, then please call 0800 612 8719 and we can get you sorted out, nicely in advance of the festival season.

Campervan hire

Campervan hire, that’s what it’s all about!

Flicking through the pages of statistics for this site, we can see that 20.8% of the visitors are looking for campervan hire which is great news because that is what we have here, lots and lots of campervans to hire. But hang on a minute, what is the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?

There are some subtle differences between a campervan and a motorhome but here we tend to use both terms when people ask about campervan hire. Generally we consider campervan and motorhome are interchangable terms as they both refer to vehicles which provide transport and accommodation in one. Here is the more official version…

Burstner Argos Motorhome

A Motorhome is a motor vehicle built on a van or bus chassis and designed to serve as self contained living areas for recreational travel. There is normally a divide between the cab and the living areas behind, which contain sleeping space, washroom and kitchen facilities.

Motorhomes which we often think could definitely not be called campervans are the more luxurious vehicles such as the Mooveo C7 and the 6 wheeled monster, the Burstner A747.

2 Berth Trigano Tribute 550 Newport, South Wales

A Campervan is a van equipped as a self-contained travelling home, they are normally smaller than a motorhome. There is generally no divide between the cab and the living area. It has basic facilities for cooking, washing, and sleeping. A nice example of what we would tend to call a campervan is the Trigano Tribute range, which drive just like a car and provide everything you will ever need for a couple.

So that’s the definitions sorted out, all you need to do now is call us up on 0800 612 8719 or apply for your campervan hire online.

Hire a Campervan

Hire a Campervan this Weekend

hire a campervan

Does that sound a bit frivolous? I mean it’s only February, but why not hire a campervan and go somewhere, take your family or just go somewhere nice with your partner. The weather isn’t looking fantastic just yet, but wouldn’t it be nice to just getaway for the weekend?

Motorholme are now offering weekend campervan hire as well as ‘by the week’ campervan hire.  The need came for this from the popularity of music festivals in the UK, quite often people would like to hire a campervan on Friday morning and then return it on the Monday afternoon. So a weekend campervan hire is actually more like 4 days – with 3 nights included.

Another popular reason to hire a campervan this weekend is to see if you like it.  There are many people right now in the UK considering a motorhome hire holiday this summer, but there is always the off chance that it isn’t for you (although I can’t think for the life of me why that would be) – in which case you could do a ‘dry run’.

Whatever your reason is for hiring, we are here to help, just call 0800 612 8719 for advice on the ideal motorhome for you.  For couples and people on their own something like a Trigano Tribute would be fine, especially as they are just like a car to drive, if you need a bit more room how about a Mooveo P6 3 Berth camper?  Bigger one’s like the Burstner A747-2 and the Mooveo C7 are also available should you wish to take a large family or a group of friends with you.

Family Motorhome Hire

Family Motorhome Hire

family motorhome hire

Where are you going this summer? Somewhere in the United Kingdom, Europe or further afield? If you are going outside  Europe there is not a lot we can do for you here except try and persuade you to take a family motorhome hire in Europe. And why not indeed? I have been in some of the most gorgeous beaches in the World in parts of Spain, France, Italy and even Wales. I’ve seen some of the most brilliant towns and cities in Italy, Spain and Portugal and my kids have had the most fun ever in – wait for it – Devon. Yes, it was Paignton in Devon, and OK it did involve one of the favourite uncles and some associated cousins, but it was the perfect family motorhome hire holiday.

So what is the ideal motorhome for a family motorhome hire? Well I have two little girls one is 7 (nearly) and the other one is 2 (not quite), so you would think that we could get away with a 4 berth motorhome, but not really. Kids tend to equal ‘stuff’, like bikes, pushchairs and all that stuff that they can’t seem to live on holiday without. So my weapon of choice is the Mooveo C7 as it has a garage at the back that you can fit all your kid’s junk in.

If you’d like to hire a motorhome this year, you won’t regret it and your family will love it, especially your kids. Call 0800 612 8719 to book now.

Benicassim Festival Campervans

Benicassim Festival Campervans

Benicassim Festival Campervans

If you fancy visiting a festival this summer but are a little worried about the weather, (and having to stand in a muddy field with thousands of other mud caked festival goers), then Benicassim Festival maybe the very one for you! We are quite happy to supply Benicassim Festival campervans for hire, but you will of course pick up in the UK and drive to Spain

Taking place between the 14th July 17th July 2011 the festival has the luxury of being on the Spanish Mediterranean coast in the resort of Costa del Azahar. FIB (Festival Internacional de Benicassim) is near the towns Valencia and Barcelona.

Over the 16 years since conception Benicassim has seen a wealth of acts including the Stone Roses, Radiohead and Oasis playing to the sell out audience although Oasis leader Noel Gallagher wasn’t overly happy after a few sound problems during there set in 2009. He did, however compliment the enthusiastic crowd!

The first confirmed bands for Benicassim 2011 have been announced by the FIB Bosses. The first names for Spain’s number one music festival are Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Portishead, Beirut, Elbow, Friendly Fires, Tinie Tempah and Primal Scream. Like most events Benicassim Festival campervans are going to be in short supply, so call 0800 612 8719 now and reserve yours.

So have you explored this part of Spain before? I’m a massive fan of the Costa del Azahar, north of Benicassim is Peñíscola which in my mind is one of the most gorgeous places in Europe.  The Castello at Peñíscola is Spain’s 2nd most visited tourist attraction, there are miles of sandy beach, clean blue sea and enough cheap bars and restaurants to keep anyone happy. So there is my twopenceworth, don’t just book Benicassim Festival campervans for the festival, enjoy the whole of the Costa del Azahar.

Pet Friendly Campervan Hire

Pet Friendly Campervan Hire

pet friendly campervan hire

Pet friendly campervan hire is now available! For most people, the pet in question is a dog, we don’t get many people who insist on taking their hamster or rabbit with them. The family dog is a beloved member of the household and is greatly missed when the family goes on holiday. Lots of people would prefer to take their dog with them on holiday and don’t like the idea of leaving them with relatives or in a kennel.

Smaller dog breeds are preferred because there is not a huge amount of room for dogs inside the campervans, so to be fair to all travellers, it is best to leave your Great Dane at home when considering pet friendly campervan hire.

Small campervans are not recommended when travelling with your dog because they really aren’t big enough to accommodate 2 adults, luggage and a dog. We recommend travelling in a larger campervan such as a Mooveo C6 6 Berth or Mooveo C7 7 Berth motorhome. Dogs should be safely secured in the vehicle with an approved dog harness or animal carrier. In the event of an accident, you want to ensure that your best mate is not injured. It is best to keep your dog out of direct sunlight if possible and make sure the vehicle is well-ventilated and cool so that your dog is not stressed while on the road.

It is a good idea to pack the following items for your dog: their vaccination card, registration papers, collar, lead, food, water bowl, toys, bedding and shovel, poop-scoop or a plastic bag to collect their droppings.

Your dog will appreciate their own creature-comforts from home. Also try to keep their feeding times and sleeping habits the same as home. A health check-up at the vet prior to travel is worthwhile too – you don’t want to have to organise a vet visit while on holiday.

Remember to always confirm your stay with campsites before you arrive to ensure that your dog is welcome. Pet Friendly campervan hire is possible so contact us today if you would like more information on taking your furry friend on holiday. Call 0800 612 8719 now.
